Madness and Lightning are pretty even in terms of sustained damage, madness is better in fights with lots of adds or multiple bosses due to dot spreading, Lightning is better in fights with high mobility and burst checks; for solo leveling both are perfectly fine. But if your primary interest is in playing the Assassin/Shadow class, I recommend Assassin over the Shadow because the companions and story are much better. Both sorcerer dps specs have awesome AoE capabilities, with Lightning perhaps a bit better at killing silver/gold mobs, but not by a large margin.
